That's the top from the 2×12, plus 10 pieces from the 2×4s — they fit comfortably in 4 boards, so the 5th stays whole as your practice board. Height check: 1½" top + 13½" verticals + two 1½" caps (3") = 18".

Call the store first and ask exactly this: "Do you cut dimensional lumber — 2×4, 2×6 and 2×12 — to a list of specific lengths, and is there a limit on how many cuts?" Some locations cap free cuts or only rough-cut for transport.

If they say no: a local lumberyard will usually do it, or rent a miter saw for a half day. Before you leave the store, measure two pieces that are supposed to be identical — if they differ by more than 1/16", ask for a recut. Identical matters more than exact.

Rule #1 — read first

Every hole goes where no one will ever see it

You asked exactly the right question. Yes: 100% of pocket holes are drilled on surfaces that end up hidden. The memory trick is "IN or DOWN" — every hole faces INto the piece or DOWN at the floor.

Before drilling any board, do this: look at both wide faces, pick the prettier one, and pencil-write "OUT" on it. Then drill the other face. If your pencil says OUT and the jig is on that face — stop, flip the board.
Drill

Set the 520PRO once — it stays there all day

Kreg's manual overcomplicates it. You only need two settings, both to 1½", because every board in this build is 1½" thick.

  1. Guide block → 1½". Squeeze the release on the jig body and slide the drill-guide block until the window reads . It clicks. This matches the jig to your wood thickness.
  2. Stop collar → 1½" mark. Loosen the collar's set screw (hex key in the box), drop the stepped bit into the gauge slot molded into the jig, slide the collar to the 1½" line, tighten. This stops the drill at the right depth every time.
  3. Drill 2 practice holes in your spare 2×4. Clamp jig on, drill until the collar stops, done. Now drive a screw through one into a scrap — feel how it self-taps and pulls tight. That's the whole skill.
The jig aims for you. You never eyeball an angle, never measure a depth. Clamp — drill until it stops — release. Anywhere the maps below show a hole, the jig makes it identical to every other one.
Drill

The 3 drill maps — 40 holes total 0 / 40

Three kinds of boards, three maps. Do all boards of one kind before moving to the next. Tap the counter items at the bottom of each map as you finish boards.

Map 1 — the four 13½" VERTICALS · 16 holes

  1. Pencil "OUT" on the prettier face. Flip it OUT-side-down.
  2. Clamp the 520PRO on one end, both drill guides over the board. Drill both holes.
  3. Slide to the other end. Drill both. Board done — next board, same thing. 4 boards × 4 holes = 16.

Map 2 — the four 11¼" CAPS · only 2 boards get holes · 4 holes

Which face gets the holes? The top cap sits at the top of the leg with the tabletop resting on it. Its up-side touches the table (no holes — they'd be crushed against it… and wrong). Its down-side faces into the window — that's the drill face. Mark the two nicest caps "BOTTOM — NO HOLES" right now so you can't mix them up.

Map 3 — the two 67¾" APRONS · 10 holes each · 20 holes

EACH APRON: 2 per end + 6 along the TOP edge — all on the "IN" face you're looking at the IN face (the two aprons' IN faces stare at each other under the table) every ~10" 2 end holes (→ into the legs) 6 top-edge holes — jig flush to the TOP edge (screws exit the top edge, ↑ up into the tabletop) TOP edge = the edge that will press against the tabletop. Mark it "TOP" in pencil before drilling.
Top-edge holes — the jig aims for you: clamp the 520PRO onto the apron's IN face with the jig body pressed flat against the edge you marked TOP. The jig sets the distance — you never measure it. The screw exits the top edge and drives up into the tabletop.
  1. Pencil "TOP" on one long edge and "IN" on one face of each apron.
  2. Jig on the IN face at one end → 2 holes. Other end → 2 holes.
  3. Jig on the IN face, body pressed flat against the TOP edge, roughly every 10" → 6 holes. Repeat for apron #2. 20 total.
Sanity check before putting the jig away: 16 + 4 + 20 = 40 holes, every one of them on a face marked IN, DOWN, or window-facing. Zero holes on any OUT face. If that's true, the drilling is done — everything from here is assembly.
Legs

Build the 2 legs

Each leg: 2 verticals + top cap + bottom cap = a closed rectangle. Glue every joint, screws through the pocket holes. Each finished leg is 13½" verticals + two 1½" caps = 16½" tall; with the 1½" top on, the console is 18".

How tight is tight? Set the drill's clutch low and test on the practice board first, clicking it up one notch at a time until the screw head pulls flush and stops. In pine, the moment the joint closes and the head seats flat, stop — one extra second strips the hole. A stripped pocket hole is not a disaster: back the screw out, squirt in glue, and drive a screw into the next hole over.
Measurable targets (not vibes):
  • Glue bead: a continuous bead about ⅛" wide (roughly the thickness of a pencil lead) down the middle of the joining surface. Success test: a thin continuous line of squeeze-out appears after clamping, with no dry gaps. Wipe it immediately with the damp rag.
  • Square: the two diagonals must agree within 1/16". Hook the tape on the same corner point each time and measure twice.
  1. Dry-fit first: stand the 4 boards into their rectangle with clamps, no glue. OUT faces out, cap with holes on top (holes facing into the window).
  2. Glue + screw one corner at a time. ⅛" glue bead down the middle, press together, drive the 2½" screws through the vertical's pocket holes into the cap. The screw pulls the joint tight like a clamp — stop when the head seats flush (see clutch lesson above).
  3. Diagonal check before the last corner tightens: tape-measure corner-to-corner both ways. Within 1/16" of each other = square. Not equal = squeeze the corners of the longer diagonal, then tighten.
  4. Build flat — on the kitchen floor or counter, all four corners pressed down, so the leg can't twist.
  5. Repeat for leg #2 on the same surface. Wipe glue squeeze-out with the damp rag as you go — a thin continuous line of squeeze-out is the success test; dry gaps mean you under-glued.

Assemble · Console

Assemble — everything upside-down on a blanket

The top is your workbench. Lay the top face-down on a blanket and build onto it: aprons screwed to the top first, then the legs, then the apron ends tied into the leg caps.

  1. Top face-down on a blanket (pretty face against the blanket).
  2. Pencil marks on the underside: a line across at each end where the legs sit (flush with the ends), and two lines along the length, each 1¾" in from a long edge — the apron lines. The long edges are the front and the back (the two 74¾" sides), not the 11¼" ends. Measure to where the apron's outer face will sit: each apron then covers 1¾" to 3¼" in from its edge, leaving 4¾" of open space between the two of them.
  3. Aprons first: ⅛" glue bead on each apron's TOP edge, stand it on its line (IN faces facing each other), clamp, then drive the 6 top-edge screws down into the top. Success test: thin continuous squeeze-out, no dry gaps — wipe with the damp rag. Do not skip the glue — glue+screws is what makes the top stiff enough for the tank.
  4. Legs on: stand each leg at its end line (top cap down against the tabletop), drive its 2 cap screws into the top.
  5. Tie aprons to legs: drive the 2 pocket screws at each apron end sideways into the leg's cap.
  6. Flip it upright. Sit test: sit slowly on the middle — no rocking, no creaking, and no visible dip in the top. Do not drop onto it. That's your 110-lb tank test passed with margin.

Finish

Finish: white base, clear top

One stack, buy these exact products:

Windows open, HEPA filters on. Best airflow of the day for the B-I-N step.

  1. Sand: always sand with the grain, light pressure — let the paper cut. 120 grit on edges and pocket-hole fuzz, then 220 everywhere. Done test for 120 grit: raking a flashlight across the surface shows no scratches running across the grain, no pencil marks, no sharp edges. Slightly round every edge hands will touch. Wipe dust with a damp cloth.
  2. Tape the pine top right where it meets the legs and aprons.
  3. Zinsser B-I-N over ALL leg + apron surfaces (primer AND knot-sealer — no separate primer). 45 min dry, light 220 scuff.
  4. White enamel, coat 1 — thin. It self-levels; don't rework it. ~4 hrs, 220 scuff, dust off.
  5. White enamel, coat 2. Done with the base.
  6. Clear satin poly on the top: stir (never shake), thin coat with the grain, 2 hrs dry, 220 scuff, wipe → coat 2 → scuff → coat 3. Don't sand the last coat.
  7. Cure 48–72 hrs before the tank. The finish feels dry in hours but hardens for days.
Place it — tank day: felt pads under the legs, table ~2½" off the wall (plugs live in the gap), leveling mat under the tank, tank centered, check level, then water. Never set the glass straight on the wood.
When something's off

Snags and their 5-minute fixes

A part came back from the store the wrong length

Too long is easy. Trim it. Don't re-measure — lay the correct part on top of the long one with one end flush and pencil along the far end. Copying guarantees the pair match each other, which is what actually matters; measuring twice gives you two chances to be off. Then cut, and err short, never long: a hair under disappears because the end pocket screws pull the joint tight, while a hair over won't fit between the legs and shoves them past the ends of the top.

Aprons are the most forgiving part to get wrong — both ends are hidden butt joints, set back 1¾" from the edge and tucked under the top. Nobody ever sees them, so that cut never needs to be pretty or perfectly square. The 13½" verticals and 11¼" caps are less forgiving: those set the leg's squareness, so a bad cut there is worth redoing from the spare board.

Cut before you drill that board. If the 2 pocket holes are already in the end you're about to shorten, the trim takes them with it and you'll redrill. Check the drill maps before the saw comes out.

Too short can't be fixed — cut a replacement from the spare 2×4 (that's exactly what the 5th board is for, and every beginner donates a piece or two). Out of spares? The store can match a fresh cut off any 8-footer; bring the good twin as the reference.

A pocket hole blew out the side of the board

Usually the jig or the collar wasn't set to 1½", or the board shifted under the clamp. Re-check both, then decide: if the blowout is on a face that ends up hidden inside the leg or against the wall, keep going — nobody will see it. If it's on an OUT face, cut a replacement from the spare. Zero shame; this is what the spare board is for.

A leg wobbles or one corner rocks

On a floor you know is flat, find the leg that lifts. One or two felt pads stacked under it is the honest, invisible fix — factory furniture ships with adjustable feet for exactly this reason. If instead the whole thing leans like a pushed-over box, that's racking, and it means the apron-to-leg screws need tightening.
