What you're building

Three pieces that share one construction system: box legs (a closed 2×4 rectangle so no end-grain shows), painted white, under pale pine tops. Every joint is a hidden Kreg pocket screw. The console now has just 2 legs — hidden aprons (stiffening boards under the top, defined below) replace the center leg. Spin the 3D model to see the whole set.

29" table height + 17½" bench = 11½" of lap room, sized for your family (standard 30" tables are built for 5'8"+ adults). Top is three 2×12s edge-joined = 33¾" wide — full standard width, a touch wider than your current 31½" table.

Honest note: ~16" per side is booth-style — you slide in from the end or step over, and when seated your back is near the wall/island. Your current 31½"-wide table already lives at ~17" per side with chairs, so this is familiar territory, and benches tuck fully under (chairs never do). Option: shift the table 2–3" toward the windows to widen the island-side walkway — the window side becomes the kids' "booth."

Why it's designed this way

The engineering (and the math)

Every "why" behind the design, verified with beam-deflection numbers (pine E = 1.2M psi, and doubled for creep — wood's slow permanent sag under a load that never leaves, like a tank).

Console: why 2 legs + aprons now works (this justified deleting the center leg)

An apron is a board on edge glued & screwed under the top. On edge, a 2×4 is over 4× stiffer than the same board laid flat — and married to the top, the two act like one thick beam. Span between legs: 67¾", tank ~110 lb centered.

Verdict: two 2×4 aprons pass with a wide margin (furniture standard is span ÷ 360; you're at ÷ 788 after creep). Tank glass also sits on a foam leveling mat, which absorbs tiny variations. Upgrade to 2×6 aprons for ~$7 if you want to never think about it again.

The deeper apron is the whole difference — depth is cubed in the stiffness formula, so going from 3½" to 5½" deep nearly triples the strength of the whole assembly.

Benches: why they get a 3rd (center) leg

A bench takes the biggest live load in the house: 4 people ≈ 700 lb. Over a full 77–89" clear span, no reasonable apron passes — even 2×6 aprons sag ~0.3" long-term. A center leg cuts the span to ~36¾" per side, and then the numbers are easy: 0.03" with 2×4 aprons. Under a bench a center leg is invisible and can't block anyone's knees (your knees are never under the bench center — they're out front). This is the one place the "no center legs" rule loses to physics, and it costs nothing visually.

Room fit: why the top is 33¾" wide, and why 29" tall

Width: we tested this with real plates. A 22½" top left facing plates 1½" apart — too narrow (two 10½" plates = 21" before food even lands). Full standard width is three 2×12s = 33¾", leaving ~16" per side in the 66" room. That's booth-tight by the textbook, but the current 31½"-wide table already lives at ~17" per side with chairs and works — and benches tuck completely under, which chairs can't. Placement can also be shifted 2–3" off-center to favor the island walkway.

Height: 29" instead of the "standard" 30". Standard height assumes ~5'8"+ adults; for 4'10" and 5'6" adults, 29" + a 17½" bench puts elbows and feet noticeably more comfortably. Equally easy to build — the legs are just cut 1" shorter. Kids: the 7-year-old is fine on the bench; the 4-year-old uses a booster either way.

Beginner dictionary — every term this guide uses

Box leg — two vertical 2×4s capped top & bottom with short horizontals, forming a closed rectangle. No raw end-grain shows and it's rigid in both directions.

Apron — a board on edge running under a tabletop between the legs. It's the invisible backbone of nearly every real table.

On edge — the board standing on its skinny side (like a floor joist), which is its stiff orientation.

Pocket hole — an angled hole drilled by your Kreg 520Pro jig; a self-tapping screw through it clamps two boards together, hidden from view.

Creep — wood under constant load keeps sagging slowly for months. Engineers double the calculated sag for permanent loads; every number above already includes that.

Caps — the short horizontal boards that close the top and bottom of a box leg. The "top cap" is the one that touches the tabletop; the "bottom cap" sits on the floor.

Face / edge / end — a board's three surfaces: the face is the wide flat side (3½" or more), the edge is the skinny long side (1½"), and the end is the cut-off end where you can see the growth rings (end grain). "Middle of the wide face" = center of the flat side.

Kerf — the ~⅛" of wood the saw blade itself eats on every cut. The cut plans already account for it.

Dry-fit — assembling a joint with clamps only, no glue, to check the fit before committing.

Racking — when a rectangle leans into a parallelogram shape (like a cardboard box pushed sideways). The apron-to-leg screws prevent it.

Squeeze-out — the bead of glue that oozes out of a clamped joint. Wipe it with a damp rag immediately; dried squeeze-out shows through finish.

Sight down / scuff-sandsighting is looking down a board's length like aiming a pool cue to check it's straight. Scuff-sanding is a light once-over with fine sandpaper between finish coats, just enough to make the surface powdery-smooth.

Read this first

8 tips that save first-timers

Same list as before, updated for the new design. Skim before you start.

  1. Have the store make every cut. With ~40 pieces across three builds, store cuts (or a miter saw + stop block) are what make parts identical. Buy a spare 2×4 for practice.
  2. Build in order: console → benches → table. Smallest to biggest. The console teaches you box legs, the benches teach you aprons + a center leg, and by the table you're a veteran doing the only new trick (edge-joining the top).
  3. Always dry-fit before glue. Clamp every joint together dry first. Glue won't forgive a rushed joint.
  4. Damp rag always within reach — wipe glue squeeze-out immediately. Dried glue shows as a blotch under finish, and paint won't hide it either.
  5. The top is your workbench. Lay the top face-down on a blanket and build onto it: aprons screwed to the top first, then the legs, then the apron ends tied into the leg caps. Reaching inside a finished base to add aprons is miserable — that is why the top goes down first.
  6. Thin finish coats only — paint and poly both. Thick coats cause drips, wrinkles, and a gummy surface.
  7. Seal and prime every base surface with Zinsser B-I-N. It is the shellac-based knot sealer and primer in one; there is no second primer step. Pine knots bleed yellow-brown straight through ordinary paint — this is the #1 white-paint-on-pine regret.
  8. Cure 48–72 hrs before the tank goes on the console and before family dinner on the table. Finishes feel dry long before they're hard.
Mindset: you're building 10 box legs total. The first one is slow; the other nine fly. Everything else is screwing flat boards to flat boards.
Pace yourself

The 6-session plan

Don't think of this as one big project — it's six short, self-contained sessions. Stop at the end of any session and nothing is left half-glued. Most are 1–2 hours.

  1. Shop + cuts (~1½ hrs at the store). Sight boards, hand over the cut list, then have your scheduled second-adult helper meet you to load and transport the 96" boards. No skills required.
  2. Drill everything (~1½ hrs). Jig set once at 1½"; all 220 holes assembly-line style. Podcast session.
  3. Legs, all 10 (~2 hrs). Console pair first (your warm-up), then the six bench legs, then the two big table legs.
  4. Console + benches assembled (~2 hrs). Three pieces standing by bedtime — instant morale.
  5. The table (~2 hrs). Edge-join, aprons, legs, then flip with that same scheduled second-adult helper — never alone.
  6. Finishing (spread over 2–3 evenings — coats are 20-minute jobs with drying gaps between; then the 48–72 hr cure).
Natural break point: sessions 1–4 make a complete console + benches. If life happens, the table waits patiently as a stack of cut boards.

2×12s: ask for "Select" or "Appearance grade" if they stock it; otherwise dig through the common pile. Crown-side matters less than straightness. Southern Yellow Pine (what Texas stores carry in 2×12) is actually stronger than the E-value used in the math — extra margin for free.

Zinc, not Blue-Kote: zinc is the indoor/dry-use coating — that's this project. Blue-Kote is for weather exposure; costs more, zero benefit hidden inside dry indoor joints.

Sealer + primer: Zinsser B-I-N (shellac-based), 2 quarts for the whole set. It goes over ALL leg and apron surfaces as the primer and knot sealer.

White paint: water-based cabinet/trim ENAMEL, satin, white. Buy ONE: Valspar Cabinet & Furniture, Behr Cabinet & Trim, or SW ProClassic. Apply 2 coats. Do not use wall paint; it stays soft and scuffs.

Clear top coat: water-based polyurethane, CLEAR, SATIN. Buy ONE: Minwax Polycrylic Clear Satin or Varathane Water-Based Poly Clear Satin. Apply 3 coats, tops only. Oil-based finish ambers the pale pine; do not use it.

Cut

Master cut list

Hand this to the person at the panel/miter saw. Every piece, grouped by board size. (The three 96" table-top boards need no cut at all — that's why the table is 96".)

Call the store first and ask exactly this: “Do you cut dimensional lumber — 2×4, 2×6 and 2×12 — to a list of specific lengths, and is there a limit on how many cuts?” Some locations cap free cuts or only rough-cut for transport.
If they say no: a local lumberyard will usually do it, or rent a miter saw for a half day. Before you leave the store, measure two pieces that are supposed to be identical — if they differ by more than 1/16", ask for a recut. Identical matters more than exact.

Why identical lengths matter more than exact lengths: if two leg verticals differ by ⅛", that leg can't be square. Ask the store to cut all same-length pieces back-to-back without moving the stop.

Drill

Drill every pocket hole (assembly-line style)

Nothing gets assembled yet. Set the 520Pro once — all boards are 1½" thick, so the jig preset and the bit collar stay at 1½" for the entire project — then drill every hole in one session. Screws for everything: 2½" coarse zinc.

Before any board touches the jig: look at both wide faces, pick the prettier one, and pencil “OUT” on it. Drill the other face, marked “IN.” On every apron, also pencil “TOP” on the edge that will press against the tabletop. If your pencil says OUT and the jig is on that face — stop and flip the board.

Table-top outer boards (×2). One hole every 8–10" along ONE long edge, on the underside — the screws cross the glue line into the middle board's edge. (Screws in all these pictures are drawn oversized so you can see them — every real screw in this project is the same 2½".)

You never aim these angles. The jig clamps onto the board and the drill bit can only travel one path — set the jig to 1½" once, clamp it where the hole goes, drill until the collar stops. Every hole comes out at the identical ~15°, exiting dead-center in the board. The angles in these pictures are just showing you what the jig produces automatically.
Reminder of the pocket-hole magic: you only drill the angled hole in one board. The screw is self-tapping into the second board — no pre-drilling the mate, and the angled screw clamps the joint tight like a built-in clamp.

That is 220 screws. The 250-pack leaves 30 spares for stripped or re-driven screws.

Slide the 520Pro's guide block to the 1½" preset (it clicks). Set the drill-bit stop collar to 1½" on the jig's gauge. Clamp the board in, drill through both guides, done. Practice two holes on the spare 2×4 first if it's been a while.

Legs

Build all 10 box legs

Same recipe as your original guide, ten times: 2 for the console, 2 for the table, 6 for the benches. Batch them by size so identical legs are built back-to-back.

How tight is tight? Set the drill’s clutch low and test on the practice board first, clicking it up one notch at a time until the screw head pulls flush and stops. In pine, the moment the joint closes and the head seats flat, stop — one extra second strips the hole. A stripped pocket hole is not a disaster: back the screw out, squirt in glue, and drive a screw into the next hole over.

Anatomy: 4 boards = 1 leg

Two verticals between two caps ("caps" = the short boards that close the top and bottom). Black dots = the pocket holes, drilled on each vertical's inside face; orange = the screws, which dive through the board and exit its end tilting toward the outside — you drill from inside, the screw leans out. The top cap's two extra holes (middle of its wide face) later screw up into the tabletop. Glue at every joint.

✔ Every one of the 10 legs is this exact picture — only the board lengths change.
  1. Dry-fit two verticals + bottom cap into a "U" with clamps, no glue.
  2. Glue + clamp: run a continuous bead about ⅛" wide (roughly the thickness of a pencil lead) down the middle of each joining surface. After clamping, success is a thin continuous line of squeeze-out with no dry gaps; wipe it immediately with the damp rag.
  3. Diagonal check BEFORE screws: hook the tape on the same corner point each time and measure twice. The two diagonals must agree within 1/16"; squeeze the long diagonal until they do.
  4. Build flat: on a known-flat surface, all corners pressed down (prevents twist), drive until each joint closes and the screw head seats flat, then stop → re-check the diagonals within 1/16".
  5. Close the box with the top cap (the one with the 2 downward-facing holes for the tabletop later — point those holes toward the middle of the box).
  6. Batch: console ×2 (13½" verticals + 11¼" caps) → bench ×6 (13" + 11¼") → table ×2 (24½" + 33¾"). Build each batch on the same surface in one session so heights match exactly.
Don't mix the 13" and 13½" verticals! They look nearly identical. Pencil-mark the console pair "C" and bench pieces "B" on the end grain as soon as you unload the car — the end grain gets hidden inside the box, so the mark never shows.

The diagonal trick

Hook the tape on the same corner point each time and measure twice. The diagonals must agree within 1/16". If they do not, gently squeeze the corners of the longer diagonal until they do, then drive each screw only until its head seats flat.

1Mark the underside

Top face-down on a blanket. Pencil lines: legs flush with each end; two apron lines 1¾" in from each long edge — meaning the front edge and the back edge, the two 74¾" sides. The line marks where the apron's outer face sits, so each apron then covers from 1¾" to 3¼" in, leaving 4¾" of open space down the middle. That setback is what hides the aprons — the legs are full-depth (no side overhang), so shadow does the hiding instead.

2Glue + screw the aprons to the top

Run a continuous glue bead about ⅛" wide down the middle of each apron’s TOP edge, set it on its line, and clamp. A thin continuous line of squeeze-out with no dry gaps means the glue amount is right; wipe it immediately with the damp rag. Drive the pocket screws along its length into the underside of the top. This glue-and-screw marriage is what creates the stiffness — the apron and top start acting as one thick beam.

✔ Keep apron ends exactly 0" from the leg lines — they should butt into the legs in the next step.

3Legs on, tie the aprons in, flip

Set each leg flush with the end of the top, drive its top-cap screws up into the tabletop. Then drive the 2 pocket screws at each apron end sideways into the leg's top cap — that ties the whole frame together against wobble. Flip it upright: your console now stands on 2 legs.

✔ Sit test: sit slowly on the middle — no rocking, no creaking, and no visible dip in the top. Do not drop onto it. You weigh more than the tank, so this is your proof test before finishing.
Unchanged from your original plan: 74¾ × 11¼ × 18 size, ~2½" off the wall for the outlet gap, leveling mat under the tank, felt pads under the legs.

Assembly order (same as the console)

1. Top face-down; mark end legs flush, center leg dead-center (42" — measure to the leg's centerline), apron lines 1¾" in. 2. Glue + screw all 4 apron segments down, using the same continuous ⅛" bead and no-dry-gaps squeeze-out test as the console. 3. All 3 legs on, screws up into the top. 4. Apron-end screws into each leg cap. 5. Flip, repeat for bench #2.

✔ The center leg placement isn't critical to ⅛" like the old console center leg was — the aprons carry the load; the leg just shortens the span. Get it within ¼" and move on.
Why the center leg here when we just deleted the console's? Loads. The tank is 110 lb; four adults are ~700 lb. Over an 84" bench no hidden apron passes the sag math alone — and under a bench a center leg is invisible and blocks nobody's knees (they're out front, never under the bench). Physics wins this one; the look doesn't change.

1Edge-join the top (the one new trick)

All three boards face-down on a flat floor. Do one joint at a time: run a continuous glue bead about ⅛" wide down the middle board’s edge, press the first outer board to it, and look for a thin continuous line of squeeze-out with no dry gaps; wipe it immediately. Drive that outer board’s pocket screws end-to-end — keeping the two faces flush under your fingers at each screw before you drive it (flush now = almost no sanding later). Then repeat for the third board on the other side.

✔ If one board has a slight edge gap, screw the tight sections first, then clamp or kneel the gap closed as you drive that screw.

2Aprons + legs, exactly like before 2 people

Apron lines 1¾" in from each long edge; glue + screw both 2×6 aprons down their length into the top, using the same continuous ⅛" bead and no-dry-gaps squeeze-out test; legs flush at the ends, screwed up into the top; apron ends tied into the leg caps. Flip with two adults — the table is ~125 lb.

✔ At 96", flipping is the sketchiest moment of the whole project. Clear the floor, lift from the ends, roll it over an edge — never let it pivot on one leg.
Wobble check after flipping: hands on one end, push side-to-side. A slight shimmy on a smooth floor means one leg is a hair long — a felt pad under the short-diagonal leg fixes it. Racking (parallelogram lean) should be zero; if not, the apron-to-leg screws aren't tight.
Finish

White bases, clear pine tops

Two finishes, one rule each: paint never touches the tops; poly never needs to touch the paint. The crisp line where white base meets pine top is the whole ÄMMARYD look. Tape the line where legs meet the top underside.

⚠ Ventilation (Brandon): water-based enamel and polyurethane are low-odor but still open both windows and run all 3 HEPA filters, fan pointed out. B-I-N sealer + primer is shellac (alcohol fumes) — use the best airflow of the day, with nobody else in the room and no open flame or pilot light nearby.

  1. Sand everything — always sand with the grain using light pressure; let the paper cut. Use 120 grit to knock down edges and pocket-hole fuzz. The 120-grit done test: rake a flashlight across the surface and look for no scratches running across the grain, no pencil marks, and no sharp edges. Then use 220 everywhere. Wipe all dust with a damp cloth.
  2. Tape the boundary: painter's tape on the pine top right where it meets each leg cap and apron, so white stays off the show wood.
  3. Bases — seal + prime in one: apply Zinsser B-I-N (shellac-based) over ALL leg and apron surfaces. It is the primer and knot sealer; there is no separate primer. Follow the label for dry and recoat time, then scuff lightly with 220 and remove the dust.
  4. Bases — paint: use a water-based cabinet/trim ENAMEL, satin, white. Buy ONE and use it on every piece: Valspar Cabinet & Furniture, Behr Cabinet & Trim, or SW ProClassic. Apply 2 thin coats, following the label’s recoat time, with a light 220 scuff between. Do not use wall paint; it stays soft and scuffs.
  5. Tops — clear coat: use water-based polyurethane, CLEAR, SATIN. Buy ONE: Minwax Polycrylic Clear Satin or Varathane Water-Based Poly Clear Satin. Apply 3 thin coats to tops only: coat → label dry time → 220 scuff → wipe → repeat. Don't sand the last coat. Stir, never shake. Do not use oil-based; it ambers pale pine.
  6. Cure 48–72 hrs before the tank, and before the first family dinner. Enamel keeps hardening for weeks — use coasters-level care the first month.

Order: paint first, poly second. If a poly drip lands on cured enamel it wipes off; white paint on raw pine soaks in instantly and never fully leaves.

Why finish after assembly: glue doesn't bond to paint or poly, and every joint here is glued — so bare-wood assembly first, finish last. The one exception you may take: poly the table-top panel before attaching the base (it only screws on from underneath), which lets you finish it flat. Beginner-simplest is still everything-assembled-then-finish.

Sheen matching: satin enamel + satin poly read as the same soft glow, which is what sells the two materials as one designed piece.

Place

Into the room

  1. Felt pads under all 10 legs' feet (both cap ends of each box leg — 4 pads per two-leg piece corner area works; just make it sit flat).
  2. Console: ~2½" off the wall (outlet + cords live in the gap, same as your original plan), leveling mat, then tank — centered is still prettiest, and now structurally it doesn't matter where it sits. Check level before filling.
  3. Table: centered in the 12-ft run leaves ~24" at each end; benches tuck fully under between the table legs (89" clear inside vs 84" bench — 2½" of finger room per side).
  4. First week: expect a couple of small dings and one "I should have sanded that edge more." That's a handmade table. 220 grit + a dab of poly/paint fixes anything.
You built a 3-piece matching furniture set with one jig, one screw size, and lumber-aisle boards. The set retails for well over $1,500. Take the picture for the family album.
When something's off

The 6 likely snags (and their 5-minute fixes)

A part came back from the store the wrong length

Too long is easy. Trim it. Don't re-measure — lay the correct part on top of the long one with one end flush and pencil along the far end. Copying guarantees the pair match each other, which is what actually matters; measuring twice gives you two chances to be off. Then cut, and err short, never long: a hair under disappears because the end pocket screws pull the joint tight, while a hair over won't fit between the legs and shoves them past the ends of the top.

Aprons are the most forgiving part to get wrong — both ends are hidden butt joints, set back from the edge and tucked under the top. That cut never needs to be pretty or perfectly square. Leg verticals and caps are less forgiving: those set the leg's squareness, so a bad cut there is worth redoing from the spare board.

Cut before you drill that board. If the pocket holes are already in the end you're about to shorten, the trim takes them with it and you'll redrill. Check the hole maps before the saw comes out.

Too short can't be fixed — cut a replacement from the spare 2×4. That is exactly what the spare is for, and every beginner donates a piece or two. If you're mid-project and out of spares, the store can match a fresh cut off any 8-footer; bring the good twin as the reference.

The seam between top boards has a ridge / isn't flush

Prevent: fingers straddling the seam as you drive each edge-join screw — drive only when you can't feel a step. Fix after: sand the ridge with 120 grit (a sander makes this a 10-minute job), then 220. A ridge under 1/32" disappears completely; that's why sanding comes before finishing.

A leg wobbles / one corner rocks

On a floor you know is flat, find the short leg (the one that lifts). One or two felt pads stacked under it is the honest, invisible fix — factory furniture ships with adjustable feet for exactly this reason. Racking (parallelogram lean) is different: that means apron-to-leg screws need tightening.

Pocket hole blew out the side of the board

Usually means the jig wasn't set to 1½" or the board shifted. That board face goes toward the inside where nobody sees it — or cut a replacement from the spare 2×4. This is what the spare is for; zero shame, every beginner donates a couple of pieces.

White paint bled under the tape line

Prevent: press the tape edge down hard with a fingernail, and pull tape while the last coat is still slightly wet, at a 45° angle. Fix after: let it dry fully, then shave the bleed off the pine with 220 on a block — raw wood sands clean, then poly over it.

Dust bumps / rough spots in the dried poly

Normal. That's what the 220 scuff between coats removes. If it's the final coat: wait 24 hrs, then rub with a paper grocery bag (yes, really — it's ~1000-grit) and the nibs polish right off without dulling the sheen.
